City teams attending to collapsed bulk sewer in Retreat

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate is currently attending to emergency repairs to a 990mm diameter bulk sewer main that collapsed on Prince George Drive, Retreat, this past weekend. It originally appeared to be a blocked and overflowing sewer. Upon further investigation, it was established to be a collapsed sewer causing structural damage to the road. As a result, both inbound lanes are closed from the intersection at Joe Marks Boulevard up to the intersection at 5th Avenue, Grassy Park, which is impacting traffic.
All relevant departments have been deployed to the site to attend to this matter. The area is cordoned off so that the situation can be assessed and the necessary repairs can be done in the shortest possible time.
Traffic Services and Law Enforcement are on site managing the traffic flow. Motorists are asked to please avoid this section of Prince George Drive. Traffic will be diverted to ensure timely repairs of the bulk sewer during this time.
The Water and Sanitation team will start with the necessary repairs as soon as possible.
The extent of the impact on the sewer network to the surrounding area is being assessed. The options for over-pumping the sewage beyond the collapsed section are also being explored.
